Research Interests

Julia's research is broadly focused on fairness in artificial intelligence. She is particularly interested in the different dimensions that shape users' perceptions of algorithmic fairness and in exploring whether these perceptions align with quantifiable fairness measures, such as commonly used fairness metrics in machine learning. Her research interest lies especially in questions of fairness as they relate to human users, with an emphasis on how AI systems may affect marginalized or disadvantaged groups.

In line with this, her main topics of interest are:

  • Norm development and ethical frameworks for the use of AI

  • Regulatory approaches to AI, with a focus on the EU AI Act

  • Fairness metrics in machine learning and their applicability across contexts

  • Methods for identifying and mitigating algorithmic discrimination

  • Conditions for fostering fair and trustworthy AI systems, especially from a user perception perspective
