Thesis Supervision Process

If you are interested in writing your bachelor's or master's thesis with our research group, you will find all the information you need to start your research project on this page.

How to find a suitable topic?

There are two ways to identify your thesis topic:

  • You can check the list of thesis topics currently available.

  • You can take a look at our research topics and CVs to see what we are currently working on and what our areas of expertise are. Then, you can suggest a thesis topic yourself.

How do I apply for a thesis?

After you identified an interesting thesis topic, please contact the team member that has either announced the thesis topic or fits at best to your individually developed thesis proposal. When you contact us for the first time, please provide the following:

  1. A short CV (including potentially relevant experience to the topic),

  2. your transcript of records (“Notenauszug”),

  3. a short thesis description (only if you suggest the topic yourself),

  4. an short motivation why you are interested in this topic (only if you choose a topic provided by us).

What would be the next steps after application?

Once you and your supervisor have agreed on a topic, the thesis process will begin (see figure above). This process will guide and support you throughout your thesis project.

The proposal you need to write needs to contain the following information:

  1. Working title
  2. Motivation of the research problem and the research question
  3. Summary of background literature and state of the art solutions
  4. Proposed research method
  5. Outline of the thesis
  6. Preliminary literature list
  7. Work plan including monthly milestones

Since the proposal's contents can be used in the thesis, it's worth putting in a considerable amount of work. This is especially valuable since time spent writing the proposal does not count toward the official processing time.
