Recognition of Courses Completed Abroad

Students enrolled in programmes such as Information Systems, Industrial Engineering and Management, and Economics Engineering have the opportunity to receive credit for courses completed at a host institution during their study abroad programme. Recognized courses can be applied to KIT modules, provided they meet the requirements. Courses can replace those offered at KIT or may be categorized as supplementary offerings.

For general guidelines, refer to the KIT Department of Economics and Management. Below, you will find the steps required to apply for course recognition.

Before you begin, please check who supervises the KIT course. The WI III only processes courses by Prof. Dr. Jella Pfeiffer. For courses at other chairs, please contact the respective recognition teams.

Before Your Study Abroad Programme

To facilitate the recognition process, it is advisable to seek preliminary approval of your chosen courses from me. While this preliminary approval is optional and non-binding, it ensures clarity on the courses likely to be recognized. Note that the final and legally binding approval is granted only after completing your study abroad programme.

Steps to Obtain Preliminary Approval:

  1. Collect Required Documentation:
    • Name of the host university.
    • A detailed syllabus outlining course content, referenced literature, examination format, and the number of ECTS credits.
    • A copy or link to the module handbook of the host university.
  2. Approval Process:

After Your Study Abroad Programme

To ensure a consistent and timely recognition process, follow these steps:

  1. Document Submission:
    • Please fill out the form for credit approval in the Wiwi-Portal and send a copy to me.
    • Attach supporting documents, including:
      • Transcript of Records from the host university.
      • The lecture materials of the attended lecture abroad are required (electronic format is sufficient). For self-performed tasks (term papers, etc.) intended for recognition, originals are preferred.
      • Any signed preliminary approvals received prior to your study abroad.
  2. Verification and Grading:
    • I will review your submission and calculate the equivalent German grade for each course.
  3. Final Approval:
    • Your documents will then be forwarded to the Examination Office (Prüfungsausschuss), which will issue the final approval.
    • The Examination Office is responsible for incorporating the recognized courses into your KIT transcript.

Types of Accreditation

Here the title of the foreign course is noted on your transcript of KIT and the course is part of the supplementary offerings of the module. This is not supported by us.

Special lecture (Spezialvorlesung)

Such a course is noted on the transcript as 'special lecture: [module title]' and the course is part of the supplementary offerings of the module.

curricular KIT lectures (KIT-Kurs)

A lectrue that is accreditated as a KIT course is noted on the transcript, but a relevant content alignment must be ensured.
